Registering Iron Ox Internationally With a Credit Card
When a typical caller visits my BBS to register software, he/she has to
go through the standard new user registration process. This process
involves filling out a questionnaire and visiting the validator, which
won't be much help to people calling from outside North America. Since
I added online registration, I've had several requests from
international callers for a way to register online without spending all
that precious connect time.
I am not able to offer instant registration using a guest account
because of the possibility of credit card fraud; I can only provide
instant keys to people within North America who can use the validator.
However, I understand that international post can be very slow, so I've
worked out the following system to get international callers their keys
with a minimum of delay and connect time:
1. Before calling my BBS, completely fill out the file REGISTER.FRM (no
need to print it out except perhaps for your records). If you don't
have an internet e-mail address, please be sure to fill out the
section that asks for your birthdate and BBS password, as I'll be
creating an account for you!
2. Include the following extra information at the bottom of
REGISTER.FRM: (a) your credit card type (I support Visa, American
Express, Mastercard, Discover, and JCB), (b) your credit card number,
(c) your name *exactly as it appears on the card*, and (d) your
credit card expiration date.
3. Dial my BBS. When you get to the "First Name" prompt, type the
following for "ultra-fast login":
*Guest User guest
(The "*" tells Wildcat that you want to skip all the introductory
stuff and go straight to the main menu.)
4. Hit "C" to leave a Comment to the Sysop (and say "Y" to confirm).
Type a few words so the message won't be blank, then select the
option to attach a file to the message (under Wildcat, hit Enter
twice to get to the Enter Message prompt, then hit "T").
5. Follow the instructions to attach an uploaded file to the message,
and upload the REGISTER.FRM file you previously filled out.
6. Save the message ("S" from the Enter Messsage prompt) and log off.
7. Wait at least 48-72 hours for me to receive your message, create an
account for you on the BBS, submit your charge, and create your
registration message.
8. If you don't have an internet e-mail address (or you didn't check the
box telling me to send the key to your e-mail address), call back and
log in under your real name (the one you put on the registration
form). We should have already created an account in your name by
this time, and (assuming that your charge was approved), a personal
message with your registration key should be waiting for you. Turn
on your terminal capture option, choose to read it, and log off.
You're set! If you're a good typist (and esp. if you're familiar with
Wildcat boards), you should be able to get all this done with only about
two minutes of connect time. If you have an internet e-mail address,
you can even skip steps 7 and 8 and the second call. Just check the box
on REGISTER.FRM that says you want to get your key via e-mail, and I'll
send the key as soon as your charge clears.
If you have any questions, please feel free to ask via internet e-mail
or routed netmail. Please, however, *don't* send credit card
information via either of these routes or expect me to reply via FidoNet
crashmail.
Thanks for your support!
